Impact on the environment- Case study on Bulla and Murray Goulburn
The Australian dairy industry has put together a strategic framework for sustainability. This framework focuses on improving energy efficiency, greenhouse gases emissions, efficient water use, controlling of weeds and pests. The main priority errors includes:
- improved nutrient management- fertiliser, manye and compost the goal by 2017 is to have 60% go dairy farmers using management plans
- improved water use efficiency- such as the use of irrigation water
- reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- For famers to measure their carbon foot print
- to deliver 6-8% energy reduction in processes such as pasteurisation and spray drying
- 25-50% reducing water use in processing
- new technologies to reduce fuel use in transport over long distances 5 % reduction
- 10-15% reduction of water use in processing plants,5-10% reduction in energy use
BULLA DAIRY FOODS
Bulla is focused on sustainable methods of food production they measure and monitor energy and water consumption, waste to landfill and non-renewable resource use.Bulla is a member of the Australian Packaging Covenant this an agreement to reduce the environmental impacts of packaging.Bulla can achieve this by making more recyclable packaging, recycling used packaging from households, taking an action to reduce litter. The hierarchy is a five step process of reuse, recycling, recovery and finally disposal.
- recycling packaging: cartons are made from (HPPE) which is a high density polyethylene this is separated into MERF and made into pellets. These pellets are then re-moulded into new products and new cartons. These products can even be turned into timber substitutes such as decking, fencing and outdoor furniture.
Bulla use the traffic light system of rating packaging based on environmental impact. This an effective measure to ensure packaging is sustainable.Bulla's used the life cycle assessment which was conducted over at twelve month cycle to evaluate carbon dioxide emissions on materials, packaging and transport.
MURRAY GOULBURN
Murray Goulburn has created a method to identify energy savings called 'Energy Blitz' this method uses on-site energy analysis and observations on the problem areas such as carbon dioxide emissions.MGC complies with theFederal and State environment requirements and greenhouse emissions.Murray Goulburn has its processing sites in rural areas so that transportation is not far and costly.Travelling long distances is not environmental friendly
